Pino: 1939-2010

Pino, born in the South of Italy, grew up during World War II, in the care of the remaining matriarchal society. The memories of these formative years would be the sustenance of his life's work as a fine art painter. These masterful paintings evocative of his deep respect and appreciation for women, have been collected by fans and peers, alike.

Our favorite story took place at the Prix de West Art Show and Sale. A draw was held for the privilege of buying the Pino original. It was the great Howard Terpning who, against all rules, stacked the ballot box in order to secure the coveted Pino painting. It was a turning point for the figurative painter.

Up until 2008, Pino accepted portrait commissions for the individual and for entire families, saying he enjoyed the challenge of capturing a person's true essence. These masterpieces remain, as testimonies to the very intimate relationship between artist and subject. The world is richer for his great contribution, and Pino will be missed by all.

Born Giuseppe Dangelico in Bari, Italy, on November 8, 1939, the artist Pino began his studies at the city's Art Institute. In 1960 he entered Milan's Academy of Brera where he perfected his talent and skill for painting nudes. In the two years he studied at the Academy, he came under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites (a group of young British painters, who banded together in 1848 in reaction against what they considered the unimaginative and artificial historical painting of the 18th and early 19th centuries) and the Macchiaioli (a group of 19th-century Tuscan painters who reacted against the rule-bound art academies and looked to nature for instruction). From 1960 to 1979 his work appeared in several major exhibitions throughout Italy and Europe, but he sought more artistic freedom that he experienced in Italy.

Shortly after Pino emigrated to the United States in 1979 his art work attracted the attenion of the book publishing industry. In 1980, Zebra Books Publishers commissioned him to do his first book cover. His interpretation was new, fresh and sensual,and his popularity grew within the literary community. He became the artist-in-demand for Zebra, Bantam, Simon, and Schuster, Harlequin, Penguin USA and Dell, illustrating over 3,000 books. His style influenced and eventually dominated this market.

Although Pino devoted thirteen years to illustrating book covers, he never abandoned his love for fine art and returned to it in 1992. Since then his art has been exhibited in some of the finest galleries in America; he has appeared on major TV networks and been interviewed in national and international journals. Collectors have been drawn to Pino's ability to capture the movements and expressions of his subjects. Many of his original paintings have now been released as fine art canvas reproductions,
